OUR MISSION

The South Shore Genealogical Society exists to bring together people who share a common interest in genealogy, family history, and the preservation of local historical knowledge.

We are a community-based group made up of individuals with a wide range of experience — many of whom have been researching family histories for decades. Through meetings, programs, discussion, and shared resources, we encourage the exchange of ideas, methods, and discoveries related to genealogy and South Shore history.

Our mission is not to provide professional research services, but to foster learning, collaboration, and connection among those who enjoy the ongoing process of genealogical research.

SOCIETY HISTORY

When our Charter was drawn in 1983, a group of interested people met at the James Library in Norwell, MA. Their purpose was to bring together those who shared a common interest in searching for, and learning about, their family history.

Today our society is made up of beginners, amateurs, and professionals. We work within the highest ethical standards to learn, educate, assist and disseminate to our members, sources, techniques and methods required to learn the history of their family.

Our members/ ancestors came from many parts of the world. Consequently, they search early ancestry throughout the United States and many foreign countries.

The ethnicity of our members is diverse, each with specific needs and interests which our Society tries to address.

We welcome new members who will further enrich our society with new experiences, challenges and opportunities.

Officers and Board

The South Shore Genealogical Society is led by volunteers who help guide the organization and support its activities.

Our officers and board members are drawn from within the membership and reflect the shared interests and collaborative spirit of the society. Leadership roles focus on organizing meetings and programs, maintaining communication with members, and supporting the ongoing work of the group.

NEW ENGLAND REGIONAL GENEALOGICAL CONSORTIUM

The South Shore Genealogical Society is proud to be a founding member of the New England Regional Genealogical Consortium (NERGC).

Established more than twenty years ago, NERGC is far more than a conference. It is a collaborative association of genealogical societies dedicated to bringing affordable, national-quality genealogical education to family historians throughout New England.

Incorporated in 2006, NERGC works to promote interest in genealogy, strengthen research skills through conferences and educational programs, foster cooperation among societies, and encourage high standards in the preservation and use of genealogical records.

Through our continued involvement with NERGC, we support its mission of advancing genealogical education and strengthening the genealogical community across the region.
